Barbie Is A Fashion Doll For More Than Fifty Years
I have done some search on Barbie dolls to know about who create that and idea behind of making those type of dolls. So I found some information through my search that is about history of Barbie and how it came to market and became a famous fashion doll, which I have read in wiki and through browsing some other websites.Barbie is a fashion doll manufactured by the American toy company Mattel in 1959. Barbie has been important part of the toy fashion doll market more than fifty years.
Ruth Handler watched her daughter Barbara was playing with paper dolls and noticed that she giving them adult roles. At that time most of the children were playing with infant toys. Ruth Handler got an idea of making adult bodied doll and suggested to her husband Elliot, he is a co-founder of the Mattel toy company. He was unenthusiastic about the idea.
During a trip to Europe in 1956 with her children, Handler found a German adult bodied doll called Bild Lilli which was same as she thought before. She bought three dolls, and reworked on it to make a new doll. She has given a name to it as Barbie doll. The doll made its debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York on March 9, 1959. This date is used as Barbie’s official birthday.
Mattel acquired the rights to the Bild Lilli doll in 1964. The first Barbie doll wore a black and white zebra striped swimsuit and with topknot ponytail and was available as blonde or brunette. The doll was marketed as “Teen-age Fashion Model” with her clothes and made by Mattel designer Charlotte Johnson. The first Barbie dolls were manufactured in Japan, Barbie clothes were hand stitched by Japanese home workers.Aroud 350,000 dolls were sold during first time production.
Barbie has become a cultural icon and has been given honours that are rare in toy world. In 2009, Barbie has celebrated her 50th birthday.
