Barbie Doll Designer Calvin Klein
Calvin Klein is an American fashion designer and the founder of Calvin Klein Inc.
Born on November 19, 1942, in the Bronx, New York, Calvin Klein was the second of child of Flo and Leo Stern. From a young age, he loved art and fashion, and his mother encouraged his interests. He acquired his love of sewing from his grandmother, who was a seamstress.
He attended the High School of Art and Design and later went on to New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. For five years, he worked as an apprentice on Seventh Avenue in New York City. He worked many long nights and weekends perfecting his designs.
Klein and Barry Schwartz, a childhood friend, opened the Calvin Klein coat business in 1968. Their initial success hinged on serendipity. A Bonwit Teller coat buyer accidentally wound up on the wrong floor of their building and ventured into Klein’s workroom where she placed an order for $50 thousand. When he began receiving favorable reviews from the fashion press and store executives, Klein expanded his line.
Klein used advertising with flair. He was known to create media buzz with racy ads showing young models in provocative poses. His TV ads for jeans featured Brooke Shields who proudly declared that “Nothing comes between me and my Calvins.”
Calvin Klein has been described as the master of minimalism and has won numerous awards for both his men and women’s collections. Less than 3 years after opening the coat company, the brand included sportswear, blazers, and lingerie. By 1973 the women’s wear collection included 74 pieces.
The meteoric growth continued and the brand expanded into fragrances, jeans, men’s underwear, and jewelry. He was named America’s Best Designer in 1993.
Schwartz and Klein remained the sole owners of the Calvin Klein fashion house until Phillips-Van Heusen bought the company in 2003.
In 1996, he designed the Bloomingdale’s Limited Edition Calvin Klein Barbie as part of Mattel’s designer series. He is one of several designers to have had a hand in creating a very special Barbie.
The Calvin Klein Barbie doll is a trendy, all American girl. She is dressed from head to toe in real denim. All of her clothes are designer Calvin Klein. She is wearing an authentic denim skirt with the cK label. Her fashionable grey crop top is emblazoned with the cK logo as well. To cover up she wears a cK denim jacket. She accessorizes it all with a cute backpack that holds a windbreaker with a huge cK logo. She has a denim baseball cap and sneakers to round out the whole outfit. Even her underwear has the signature Calvin Klein elastic band. She is as trendy as it comes!
