Imagine the Endless Hours of Fun With Barbie and Ken Dolls
They can even be the world famous Barbie and Ken dolls. These two dolls are well known by many people and not just children. While these two dolls are mainly used as toys by little girls, collectors will not hesitate to buy either of these should they come across one.
The Barbie and Ken dolls are made so that they resemble adults. The many different careers and styles of the years have an impact on the lives of these dolls. Today you will find that the world of Barbie has many accessories and items that can be used with either of these two dolls. There are also companion dolls that are of different ethnic backgrounds.
The original Barbie doll was based on a German doll called Bild Lilli. Once Mattel made Barbie and acquired the rights to the German doll, Lilli was soon discontinued. Barbie was then officially given the name Barbara Millicent Roberts. Ken was named Ken Carson. The names for the Barbie and Ken dolls were taken from the names of Ruth Handler, who was the original designer of Barbie.
While Barbie made her debut into the toy market during 1959 at the International Toy Fair in New York, Ken made his appearance during 1961. From 1961 Barbie and Ken have been considered as a couple. Their relationship was a on and off relationship. After a 43 year relationship, the Mattel Company decided that it was time for the two dolls relationship to end.
This separation lasted for about 2 years. In 2006 Barbie and Ken were made into a couple again. While the reason for the separation of the famous couple is probably due to a decline in sales, the reason they are a couple is that probably Barbie doesn’t sound complete without Ken.
While the popularity of both Barbie and Ken is attributed to the clothes and accessories you can buy, the look of the dolls may also play an important role. For many young girls Barbie’s looks are in keeping with the careers that she keeps getting. This fashion conscious doll has gone from being merely a fashion doll to a pilot, doctor, airline stewardess, astronaut, rock star to even being a fairy tale princess or mermaid.
Now while Barbie and Ken are just toys they are iconic figures. The looks and careers you see these dolls appearing in are an indication of how toy fashions can change. The one constant perhaps is the imagination and the endless hours of fun that a girl can derive from just playing with her Barbie and Ken dolls.

Please help! Trying to find the perfect doll for me..?
Yes, I love dolls. I’m a beginning doll collector. Right now, I just have lots of Barbie dolls and very few porcelain dolls, but none of them just seem right to me.. I want something more poseable I guess, or at least one that can bend its legs and arms easily, and move its head. I would love something I could dress up in the Sweet Lolita style (( it’s a Japanese fashion )) but BJDs are soooo expensive..
So I guess I’m basically just looking for a nice doll I can dress up in antique fashions..? Any dolls like that?
Finding the perfect doll is a lifetime challenge but fortunately there are many dolls available which fit your criteria.
BJDs come in all sizes and prices. You might find Fairyland’s 11 cm Pukipuki, 15.5 cm Pukifee or 25 cm Little Fee will fit your budget. Basic dolls without faceups are the cheapest. Look on ebay or Denver Doll Emporium (denverdoll.com), which offers layaways. Or check out Denofangels.com for more help from BJD collectors.
Helen Kish 14″ Chrysalis dolls are available nude on ebay or Happily.com. Ed Ferry, the owner, is terrific to deal with and offers layaways.
Ellowyne Wilde or one of her companions, Prudence or Amber, (all 16″) look good in Sweet Lolita styles. Some Robert Tonner 16″ fashion dolls or his little girl dolls like Betsy McCall or Ann Estelle (14″, 10″ and 8″) might also appeal to you and can be found nude on ebay. Tonner’s Kickits (8″) are already dressed in Sweet Lolita styles.
Blythe – the big headed doll with changeable eyes – looks good in Japanese fashions. The original ones are way out of my budget and maybe yours too but there are reproductions available.
You might also consider Nancy Ann Storydoll Dolls. The vintage ones (4″ to 6″) are readily available on ebay. The earliest ones are bisque and have moveable arms and legs. Later ones, referred to as frozen legs, only had moveable arms. The ones produced in the 1950s were plastic with sleep eyes and moveable arms and legs. Any of them would look look in old fashioned dresses. A few years ago, a new Nancy Ann company was formed featuring 6 1/2″ porcelain dolls sculpted by Dianna Effner. These are very charming.
Yahoo groups have specialized doll groups like NASBdolls where you will find a lot of useful information and private doll sales. Recently one member was selling undressed 18″ Nancy Ann Style Dolls for very reasonable prices.
And don’t overlook antique dolls. Queen Ann, Bru and Jumeau may be laughably expensive and out of reach but there are many less expensive ones.
Don’t be in a hurry to buy. Enjoy the hunt!
