On Tuesday January 20th 2009 the world was introduced to the designs of Jason Wu. That was the day that Michelle Obama, wife of President elect Barack Obama, stepped out in a gorgeous one shoulder floor length white gown. That gown was designed by Jason Wu, and despite the fact that he had been working for years before that it truly was his moment of recognition.
Jason Wu was born on September 27th in 1982. He was born in Taiwan, but at the age of nine his family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. As a child he learned how to sew by making doll clothes. He would both design and make the garments himself. His flair for design led him to travel to Tokyo to study sculpture. As a teen Wu showed his ingenuity by creating freelance work for himself with a local toy company. He would create clothing designs for the dolls manufactured by Integrity Toys. After only a year of work he was quickly named the creative director of Integrity toys. In his senior year of high school he made the decision that he wanted to become a fashion designer.
That decision lead him to study at the Parson’s The New School for Design. After pursuing his formal education in design he wanted to achieve some practical experience. That led to him interning with designer Narcisco Rodriguez.
That early work with doll designs came in handy. Wu had been smart when it came to his earnings from that early work, and he was able to use it to launch his first ready to wear clothing line. In 2006 he debuted his line, and just two years later Wu was awarded the Fashion Group International’s Rising Star award. That same year he was nominated for the Vogue Fashion Fund award.
Wu’s early clients were celebrities like Ivana Trump, Amber Valletta, and drag queen RuPaul. However, it was truly his partnership with Michelle Obama that led to his recent success. Wu was introduced to Michelle Obama by the editor at large of Vogue Magazine. That introduction led to Michelle Obama purchasing four dresses from Wu, one of which she wore on the Barbara Walters Special that aired just before the 2008 election. Just two months later she stepped out in that stunning white chiffon gown that secured Jason Wu’s place in the fashion spotlight. However, that was not the end of Obama’s partnership with Wu. She has worn a vibrant magenta dress of his on the cover of Vogue, takes a chartreuse silk dress to Europe, and even sported a coat by Wu to her meeting with the Queen of England.
Jason Wu is still considered to be a baby in the eyes of the fashion world, but his work stands alone next to that of more seasoned designers. He creates classically beautiful pieces that fit a woman’s body. He knows how to make a woman look her best, and more importantly she looks like she feels great in his clothes!
