Because silver is a soft metal it is most often mixed with a small percentage of copper to give it strength. Some also prefer sterling silver over gold because of its reflective properties. The whitish metal seems to glimmer and looks good on nearly all types of skin tones. Another reason handmade sterling silver jewelry is so popular is because it is a versatile accessory, crossing easily from casual wear to afterhours parties with graceful panache.
Handmade jewelry designers like to work with silver because it is soft, making it easier to create really unusual and interesting fashion designs. It can be stretched and bent and shaped in any way the handmade jewelry designer can imagine. Another bonus is the price. Since sterling silver is plentiful, it is widely available and therefore modestly priced as compared to gold which is at an all-time high. That is not to say that it is worth less. It was around the Victorian age in Europe that sterling silver jewelry began looking more like what you would expect to see on women (and even some men) of today’s era. Jewelry like handmade sterling silver was once a distinction of affluence because it represented an attitude that you were doing very well in life and thus could afford beautiful things such as silver.
Even today, it’s safe to say that handmade sterling silver jewelry is here to stay just as it has endured many centuries of wear. Although the styles have obviously changed, the metal itself has remained a signature and timeless fashion accessory that is both alluring and affordable as a choice for jewelry wearers around the globe.
